And Sweet Dreams went on to have relative legendary status. And you should document all your great gear in one place... like djdudeman.com, so us gear geeks can indulge in your obsessions. :)

I should also add, a few more albums made on sub-par gear...

Primus - Suck On This - A live album that launched Primus' career. Recorded on a Tascam 388. A home portastudio deck.

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams - Another killer hit recorded on another semi-pro deck, the Teac 80-8.

Two good examples of being able to make money or a career off of gear that isn't boutique or top of the line.

Yes James, I have both machines in my basement.

That's exactly what I'm taking about. Sometimes we need that reminder about what's more important... Sure quality matters, and good engineering matters, but when either of those become more consuming than the music, the music suffers.
I've referenced this before, but one of my favourite producers is Daniel Lanois because he concentrates on the music and doesn't let equipment or technology get in the way. :)
As the legendary Rupert Neve says, "...who cares about efficiency when we're talking about music..."

Ok, that didn't add much to the convo... I find the quality thing to be very important these days. Just as image and presentation is. People want to know that you take yourself seriously before they are willing to emotionally invest in your work.
As a musician as soon as get into my tiny bedroom studio, I too often find that the pursuit of 'quality' distracts me from making music. Before I know it I'm at Long and McQuade renting mic's and pre-amps. Once this happens I become far to focused on the sound rather than the performance or the song. You simultaneously become both the artist and the critic. It's hard to say one matters more than the other - both are important when it comes to sharing your music with the world, but long before a microphone ever existed people were making music. And even if recording technology was not available to me, I would still be a musician - I try to remind myself of that when I get wrapped up in the process.
